PANIYIRI - It's all Greek to Brisbane
The famous yearly Greek odyssey known as Paniyiri, when Brisbane experiences Hellenic hospitality at its best, will take place from May 14 to 20 at Musgrave Park and The Greek Club in South Brisbane.
While the historic steps of the Acropolis may be some 15,000km from the grassy flats of Brisbane's Musgrave Park, all the sights, sounds, characters and culture from the country which produced Homer, haloumi, honeypuffs, Socrates, Plato and the famous Zorba will be celebrated in style during the much anticipated festival.
Australia's very own Greek Goddess and Logie Award winning actress Effie will headline Paniyiri's packed program of events.
The Paniyiri Main Stage in Musgrave Park will host almost 20 hours of entertainment over the weekend of May 19 and 20, including the popular Greek Dancing with the Stars, Grape Stomping, Olive and Honeypuff Eating Competitions, the famous Kappa Bros., Hellenic Dancing, Ta Palikaria and of course the Zorba.
In Musgrave Park more than 30 food stalls will showcase the tastes, recipes and secrets of food from all corners of Greece. Baklava, Honey Puffs and Kataifi are a must for the sweet tooths, or Souvlaki, Spanakopita, Haloumi, Dolmades or Kefteds for those with a spicy preference.
In The Greek Club, a full program of Cooking Demonstrations and Lectures will take place, while an Exhibition of Church regalia and Sacred Vessels and Church Tours will be hosted in the Greek Orthodox Church of St George
Now into its 31st successful year, Paniyiri is a community initiative of the 25,000-strong Greek community of South East Queensland but also the general community in a celebration in fun, food and friendship. The festival is a testament to Greece, proving that it really is a destination where tradition holds firm and where hospitality and living life to the fullest is everything.
