Apr/May 2005 - A Safer City for our Cab Drivers
Premier Peter Beattie has announced sweeping changes with his City Safety Action Plan (The Plan) in an effort to "deal with the problems of violence in the inner city". A recently held summit focused on five main areas – "managing alcohol, strengthening policing, improving transport, creating a safer environment and working together".
"Under The Plan, A Brisbane Central District liquor Unit will be established by the Queensland Police Service to identify and gather intelligence on crime hotspots.
A direct liaison point of contact will be established between the Queensland Police Service & the Brisbane City Council to enable a more timely response to crime and safety issues.
A 3.00 am lockout for all licensed premises in the Brisbane City Local Government area will be trialed for 12 months. Patrons will be able to consume alcohol up until 5.00 am but if they leave a venue they will not be able to enter another.
The State Government, in association with Brisbane City Council will be exploring ways to improve public transport services after midnight on Friday & Saturday nights. (It is at these times that the Taxi Industry is the only major public transport provider left to take everyone home.) Measures to improve taxi rank security and boost the numbers of taxis at peak times will also be explored.
A Code of Practice for the Responsible Service, Supply and Promotion of Liquor will be developed to ensure liquor is served in a responsible manner."
In response, John Tighe General Manager of Black & White Cabs said, "these initiatives will be good for all Black & White Cabs drivers and their responsible passengers in offering them a more secure environment. In addition, the imminent introduction of cameras in cabs will further assist our drivers as they go about their vital role in the provision of public transport."
